The Hacker Lineage2015–

Ethereum & Programmable Value

If Bitcoin is digital gold, Ethereum is the digital legal system.

Kernel

Vitalik Buterin's 2013 yellow paper proposes that the chain itself becomes a general computer — that smart contracts, not just balances, can be the unit of consensus. The result is a different political project from Bitcoin: not commodity money, but a permissionless platform for ownership, identity, and coordination. Ethereum has been less successful as money and more successful as substrate; the L2 / rollup / zk ecosystem of 2024–2026 is its full deployment.

§ 01

Origins

Buterin pitches the concept in Bitcoin Magazine, releases the yellow paper with Gavin Wood, raises in the 2014 crowdsale. Genesis is July 30, 2015. The 2016 DAO hack and contentious hard fork establish — uncomfortably — that the community is willing to override code-is-law when stakes are high enough.

§ 02

Doctrine

Computation is the new asset class. Programmable money makes new forms of coordination possible. Credible neutrality is the political product; rollups are the scaling product; zero-knowledge is the privacy product. The chain should be a public good with private competition layered on top.

§ 03

Lineage

Ethereum → DeFi summer (2020) → NFT bubble (2021) → ZK rollups (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base) → ZK-EVMs (zkSync, Scroll, Linea) → restaking (EigenLayer) → privacy chains (Aztec, Penumbra, Psy). The platform absorbs each new use case.

§ 04

Conflicts

Bitcoin vs. Ethereum is the longest-running intra-tribe argument in crypto. Maxis call Ethereum a corporate platform with a CEO; Ethereans call Bitcoin a museum piece. The 2026 reality is more mundane: they occupy different evolutionary niches and neither will eliminate the other.

§ 05

Trajectory

Ethereum's real second act is privacy. The first decade was transparency-by-default; the second is shielded execution layered on top. If x402 and machine-to-machine commerce take off in 2026–2027, the chain best positioned for it is a private-by-construction Ethereum descendant.
